I guess you are referring to registering for preschool for your baby when he/she is 2 or 3 years old? A lot of my friends starts visiting centres and asking about their availability when their babies are around one. Some even started when it is near their due dates. The waiting list for popular centres could be long and they wanted to "play safe". That being said, it is really dependent on which school you are considering, as well as the location. Some areas may be more popular than others. If you are planning in advance, no harm calling the centre now (especially if it is a popular one) to find out about their "waiting list situation". Also, do go down to have a look at the place when considering the different places.

For popular IFC and playgroup (18-36months), and even CC, you can actually register by placing name/deposit to the desired centre even when your baby is 2 months old now. Also, it depends on the centre itself, some of them have certain registration period and you need to take note of the dates. Due to popular demand for preschool and increased population, we have no choice but to act fast to secure a place. Normally, my friends who are trying to search for CC just before 1-2 months to the actual enrollment are placed on long waiting list and have to resort to other locations/choices.

With how concerned parents are in enriching their children's lives these days, best to start everything early. I thought primary school registrations were competitive but there is a burgeoning trend of competitive spots for pre schools and kindergartens too. I heard the waiting lists for these schools can be pretty long. As such, if you have any particular school you're eyeing, best to call and enquire if you can book a spot for your child wayyyy in advance.
