I had a similar not so good experience with Dr Chia when I went for a fertility check before trying to get pregnant. Paid $400 for the consult and felt like I hardly even got 50% of my money’s worth. All I got was a Pap smear, HPV test, ultrasound on my reproductive organs + comments that I had a lot of eggs (which I took to mean all was ok but in fact not the case - see next para), that I may have trouble breastfeeding and that I should try having kids sooner (I was turning 32 at the time). I also felt the entire experience to be quite impersonal, rushed and like her heart and mind were somewhere else. Only realised how much of a rip off her fees are for what you get after switching to a different obgyn with a specialisation in fertility treatment. My new obgyn (Dr Steven Teo at STO+G) did all of the above as the bare minimum PLUS comprehensive blood tests for any abnormalities like PCOS which it turns out I had. I also find him much more professional (+there’s always a female nurse in the room during the consult) and knowledgeable about fertility issues/ treatment and will take the time to explain the WHY for my condition or why he’s prescribing any supplement or medication.
I’m with dr chia yee tien currently and in my second trimester. However, I am having lots of mixed feelings about continuing with her. I understand what others mean by she can be “rude” as she can sound quite curt and disengaged at times - not really a style I would like my gynae to have. Nevertheless, I don’t doubt her knowledge and skills. A month ago she had prescribed me aspirin to lower my risk of preeclampsia, without highlighting to me any of the possible side effects. Long story short, I had diarrhoea for almost 4 weeks and intestinal bleeding due to the aspirin. When I told Dr Chia about it, she merely responded that this is a very rare side effect that “only occurs in elderly”. This incident left me scarred and as a FTM-to-be, I have lost trust in her. It’s so hard to find another gynae to switch to as there are so many mixed reviews online :(
I am with dr chia yee tien right now, and I understand what you mean by rude. She does give a no-bullshit-discipline-mistress vibe when I asked too many unnecessary questions as a FTM… like additional tests to be done etc.. but her bottom line was to get the point across not to worry unnecessarily and to trust her professionalism. She would advise if she sees something not right. Which I agree I can be quite paranoid. I haven been to enough gynaes to give a comparison but if u don’t feel comfortable with her, do switch out to someone else. After all, her charges r pretty costly, so find someone u like that u would be seeing every month! Apart from that, I think she’s pretty professional and tells us what we need to know even without us prompting. :)
I’m seeing dr chia yee tien now and actually have a good experience with her - she has been my gynae even before I got pregnant and generally been helpful with advice. Yes she can be a bit harsh especially when she was trying to help me deal with my anxiety in early pregnancy- I was so gan chiong and really to the point of going a bit nuts. The way she helped me is to get me to snap out of it and trust the process - I do find that for a lot of mums (esp for me as FTM) that may be quite difficult. I’m in a much better place mentally now and really appreciate how she has guided me. But that being said perhaps you are looking for a different kind of gynae and you may want to find someone you feel more comfy with
I was with Dr Chia Yee Tien earlier today and I am super-pissed off with her attitude. No doubt she is an expert but I find her reply rude and sarcastic. She did things without explaining the purpose and charged an exhorbitant amount. At my age, things like pap smear are heavily subsidised by the government but this lady charged like 5 times of what I used to pay. I'm definitely not coming back and will not recommend! Oh and not to mention, after the check-up, she told me to clear all the tissue papers on the bed myself.
I chose Dr Han How Chuan from Mount E Novena cause he help delivered my aunt's baby 19 years ago and online reviews were good. personally I feel that he was so much better than the female gyane I saw at kkh. If you feel uncomfortable with this gyane, I would suggest to change a gyane as being a FTM is already stressful enough and you have many queries and worries. Do find a gyane who can reassure you.
Hi! Pregnancy is a v stressful experience especially for first time mummies (dk what to expect/ scared sth May happen to baby etc) hence you might want to look for other gynaes that you can click with and will support you, else it will add more stress to you. My gynae was Dr Liana Koe and Dr Steven Teo from STOG! They were both v warm, supportive and truly cared for their patients :)
Hi mummy! If you don’t feel comfortable with your gynae perhaps you should change.. The same thing happened to me (but not with your dr) as my previous gynae wasn’t that encouraging despite he was my dr for years.. The most important is you get someone you can trust! 😊
If you feel uncomfortable with the gynae I suggest you to look for an alternative gynae as you place yourself and baby's live with the gynae of your choice. I have changed 2 gynaes until I decided to stick with one that I trusted most finally.
