How long should a couple, who's trying really hard for a pregnancy, wait before visiting the fertility specialist?

some of my friends waited for few years after married. They tried so hard then they went to fertility expert, unfortunately it was not successful then they give up. Few months later, my friend got pregnant. I think it depend on when do you want to go after trying for long time as well as your age as well.
