Here is an article highlight the different types of weaning (Child-led weaning, Mother-led weaning, Sudden weaning or cold turkey, Gradual weaning, Partial weaning) that you can consider: http://kellymom.com/ages/weaning/considering-weaning/how_weaning_happens/ To start the process, here’s an article which highlighted some points to consider before your start that you may find helpful: http://sg.theasianparent.com/things-to-know-before-you-start-weaning/ Highlighted in the article are the following points: - Whether you are ready or would you consider baby-led weaning? If you are going back to work, you can think about how to express and store milk. Start the process of weaning gradually to give both your body and your baby to adjust - The weaning process may take a few months, do it gradually as a sudden stop will lead to engorgement, blocked ducts and is also traumatic for the baby - Before starting the process, speak to your pediatrician for advice on supplement and which type of milk to give your baby - Research on what type of milk bottles you should buy, and the different types of teats available (keeping in mind that there are different flow rates available) - Prepare to start your baby on solids and prepare a list of food to let your baby try - Also good to learn about how to prepare solids and how to puree/blend/strain food for your baby (and the equipment involved) - Be prepared for resistance from the baby (tears and screaming) - Pay more attention to your baby and shower him/her with more cuddles to help provide a sense of comfort and security to facilitate the process - Try to avoid starting the process in the midst of other major changes that may be taking place (e.g., going back to work, going on a holiday)
There are two different ways: cold turkey and in phases. For me, I will try not to use cold turkey as I find it too harsh on the baby as baby is very attached to my breasts. Imagine someone suddenly remove something that you like and you will be very upset too. However, it also depends on your baby's temperant, where some babies are quite easy-going and cold turkey is workable. I just weaned my 2 years old boy from direct latching. He still suckle my breasts although there is no milk and I feel that it is time for him to wean off. What I did is, I told him mummy has no more milk for him as the milk dried up. You can have 10 suckles each time for today and I gradually reduce the number of suckles that he can have. The difficult part is the night weaning where he will cry inconsolably. I took 2 weeks to wean him off my breasts totally. You need to be persistent and do not give in at all when your baby cries, just to reassure him/her it is okay and give him the substitute of your breasts e.g. milk bottle. It takes a lot of patience to deal with changing behaviour (due to upset) during the weaning too.
My mom weaned my youngest sister from breastfeeding when she was almost 3 years old. At first, what mom did is to limit the nursing sessions with sis. She was half-hearted when she was doing it. But she had to do it because sis is too naughty that she bites on mom’s nips especially when during night time nursing sesh. When mom came into the firm and committed decision to wean the toddler from breastfeeding, she just totally ignored my sister’s eagerness to feed on her breast and gives her a bottle instead. Cold turkey it is! But of course, mom didn’t gave her daughter other reasons to “hate” her and supplements this change with more cuddles and kisses. This blog gives 5 easy and natural ways to wean toddlers too: http://www.mamanatural.com/5-tips-on-weaning-toddler/
This article has some good tips: http://www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/week-47/weaning.aspx I think the main message is to not stress out about it and do things gradually. Move from more sucks and less bottle to the opposite. It will also be helpful if dad or someone else does the bottle-feeding and you do more of the solid food meals so your baby knows that there are multiple sources of nourishment and can slowly let go of the security of your breasts.
