How do you discipline and get serious with your kids?

If the matter is really serious, I make sure I find time to have a heart to heart talk with my toddler. It's always full of emotions but I make sure he fully understands where I'm coming from and I want him to realize what have gone wrong and that he doesn't have to do it next time.
