Some new moms think that once their newborns sprout teeth, breast-feeding will suddenly become very painful, and they may consider weaning at that point. There’s no need. Teething shouldn’t have much impact on your nursing relationship. In fact, your baby might need comfort when their gums are hurting, and your breast has been their greatest source of comfort until now. I wish I had a step-by-step plan to help all of you breastfeeding mothers deal with a baby who bites during breastfeeding, but I don’t. But I will share what worked for me because as it turns out, I tried my best not to let my baby get overly frustrated with hunger. The minute I noticed a hunger cue, I tried to feed him quickly. When he was about to latch on, I got him to open his mouth really wide. Then, peeking out of one eye and cringing, I stuffed my breast into his mouth really fast and pressed his nose up against my breast. The minute I felt his jaw clamp down, I pressed him into me even further. Basically, I was pressing his face against my breast so much that he couldn’t breathe. In order to catch a breath of air, he had to unclamp and rear his head. And it worked. He got the gist: Don’t bite mama or you will suffocate against the boob.
