There's a follow-up study that was just reported today: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/sep/17/air-pollution-particles-found-on-foetal-side-of-placentas-study TL;DR: Research finds black carbon breathed by mothers can cross into unborn children. They found nanoparticles on the foetal side of the placenta and the number correlated with air pollution levels experienced by the mothers.
