In general, language skills start developing between the ages of one and two. Any form of communications, such as babbling, pointing to an object, responding to your comments, indicates that he/she is beginning to understand what is said to him/her (even though he/she is not using actual words to communicate with you). Typically, you may get to hear your baby speaking her first word at the end of 12 months. Still, every baby develops differently. My nephew only started talking at around 15 months. It was clear that he could understand us and was blabbering in his own baby language, but he just refused to “converse” with us. Now, at almost four years of age, we can’t get him to stop talking. ;p I think there is no need for you to be too worried as long as your baby is showing signs of comprehension. This article provides some useful tips to encourage your baby to start talking: http://www.janetlansbury.com/2012/06/ten-best-ways-to-encourage-toddlers-to-talk/ Some simple suggestions from the article include: - Using your authentic voice and speaking in first person. The more they hear language spoken properly, the sooner they will learn and try speaking it. - Slow down so that your baby can listen and understand. Hope this helps!

My firstborn does not speak at all until she is about 2 years old plus. I used to worry a lot about her and was advised to bring her for speech therapy. One day, out of the blue she speak in a full statement: "Ma Ma, give me milk milk" since then she has been speaking non-stop in a statement instead of words. Later, I found out some children are prefectionist like my girl, they dislike to make mistake and will only speak when they are confident. You can try read the resources provided by other mommies and start doing your own assessment. Need not to worry too much. My girl is 4 now and sonetime I wonder who is the Mommy as she can really talk and speak very well. Sonetime she even corrected me when I pronounced a word wrongly.

I think you shouldn't worry too much. Different babies develop differently especially when it comes to talking. Does your child communicate in other ways to you like using actions or making random sounds? That's normal as well. Also, if your child is able to follow simple instructions, then it means that he or she shouldn't be too far along from talking. Sometimes I personally think it could be a personality thing as well. I didn't talk for years when I was a baby and even as a young child, I hated talking -- was always teased by the other family members for being "mute". Haha. Now they can't shut me up at all.

My child is currently 2 yrs old and only started more single words in recent weeks after some early intervention therapy. I agree that every child develops at different phase. Apart from speech delay, observe if your child has other developmental delays or behaviours that can cause worry. A single developmental delay is less worrying but if they are more signs, you may want to seek professional assessment and apply early intervention if required.
