Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can potentially hurt your future fertility, regardless of your gender. They can cause scarring and damage to the fallopian tubes. Sexually transmitted diseases can lead to tubal scarring, ectopic pregnancy, other reproductive problems, and ultimately infertility if left untreated. If a mother has sexually transmitted disease, it is possible for the fetus or newborn to be infected. Some sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, and cytomegalovirus can be passed from mother to infant during delivery when the infant passes through an infected birth canal. A few sexually transmitted diseases, including syphilis, HIV, and CMV, can infect a fetus before birth during the pregnancy.
