Some of my mommy friends use Braun Ear Thermometer and I hear good reviews about it but you need to gently pull the ear backwards and insert the instrument at the right position. From what I know, axillary thermometers are the least accurate in temperature reading and yes, they are harder to use especially for fidgeting kids. Ear canal thermometers are quite difficult to use as well cause you have to insert them in the right position to get the most accurate reading. If your child is under 12months though, it is not advisable to use as their ear canal are too narrow. Temporal artery (forehead) thermometers are the most accurate according to studies but some arguments are raised against it as it uses infrared. How old is your little one? There are thermometers that works best for certain ages. Please read some of these articles to know which thermometer will work best for your baby. :) http://www.momtricks.com/baby-thermometers/ http://parent.guide/best-baby-thermometer-the-expert-buyers-guide/
Ours is Exergen Temporal Scanner. Fast and efficient in getting my bubba's temperature and has been so helpful since he hates ordinary thermometers poked in his armpit. The packaging also says that its accuracy has been clinically tested. It's more accurate than ear thermometers according to Harvard and almost as accurate as rectal thermometers according to Hospital for Sick Children
