I've heard so many stories of babies suffocating to death because of crib bumpers so a resounding NO. Plus The American Academy of Pediatrics and SIDS prevention groups caution against using crib bumpers. http://www.kidsindanger.org/family-voices/preston/ Many crib bedding sets are still sold with bumpers and you maybe tempted to use some kind of bumper or liner to keep your baby's limbs from slipping between the crib slats or your baby's head from banging against the sides. However there are no evidence that bumpers prevent injuries. Instead, reports show that they can lead to suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment. Some bumpers also reduce the flow of fresh air in your baby's crib, which is considered a contributing factor in SIDS. http://www.babycenter.com/408_is-it-safe-to-use-bumpers-on-my-babys-crib_1368447.bc
I bought bumper cots for my babycot but ended up taking them off the very first night because I wasn't able to see my baby (the cot was right next to my bed). And yes, like the other mummies mentioned, having a bumper cot increases the risk of SIDS in the case that the baby flips during sleep. You're not able to see him, and the baby wouldn't be able to move away by himself yet. Bumper cots are thick and wouldn't allow for breathing. I suggest for bumper cots only when the baby is older, and able to flip on his own.
Most mothers I know do not use cot bumpers. The risk of Sudden Infant Death few Syndrome and strangulation are the two main reasons that cause them to rethink having one. Swaddling works in helping their babies sleep. The rest are not as concerned about the sides as they babies hardly move much. For the who do not have their cots in the same room, they pay more attention to the baby monitor and would attend to their babies when they hear their babies stirring.
