Boosters serve as a REMINDER to your Immune System. A booster dose is a re-exposure to the immunizing antigen. It is intended to INCREASE IMMUNITY against that antigen back to protective levels, after memory against that antigen has declined through time.
There were no definite answers yet as to why the length of acquired immunity varies with different vaccines. Some offer lifelong immunity with only one dose, while others require boosters in order to maintain immunity. The good news is, there’s been continuous studies to provide us with more explanations in due time.
