Most pregnancies last 37 to 42 weeks - if a pregnancy lasts more than 42 weeks, it is called post-term. If you have not given birth by 42 weeks, there are greater health risks for you and baby. The risks of stillbirth are higher. Also, there might be complications such as placental problems, low amniotic fluid, and a pinched umbilical cord. This could lessen the amount of oxygen and nutrients that the baby gets from you. Considering these factors, your doctor will suggest labour induction. Meanwhile, keep monitoring baby’s kicks at least twice a day. Make sure that the baby moves at least 10 times in 2 hours - if not, go to the hospital immediately. Also, watch out for signs of labour like water bag breaking, regular contractions, mild diarrhoea etc Here is an article on various methods of inducing labour: https://sg.theasianparent.com/induction-of-labour-methods
By the end of 41 weeks, if you haven’t delivered your baby, your doctor will do tests to check on the baby. These tests include a non-stress test and biophysical profile (ultrasound). They will check the baby's heart rate, response and well-being, and other factors like amniotic fluid levels. If the tests show that everything is fine, your doctor may decide for you to go into labour naturally. If baby is having problems though, doctor may suggest labour induction or a C-section. After 41 weeks, the health risks to you and your baby are higher. Doctor will also consider the age of the mother. In older women, especially those above 40, she may decide to induce labour by as early as 39 weeks.
Usually you should discuss induction with your doctor if your pregnancy has gone beyond 41 weeks. It is usually considered for two main reasons: 1. pregnancy going beyonf the expected due date and there may be potential risks to continuing the pregnancy further 2. a reduction in fetal movements was observed, or a reduction in placental functions, or where a natural delivery is desired by the baby is getting too big Here are some useful information on induction that you can think about: http://www.sassymamasg.com/looking-to-induce-labour-expert-answers-your-questions/
What is the pregnancy isn't up to 40weeks, if it's in the 37 weeks, can the mother be induced due to tiredness and weariness of carrying the pregnancy. Any side effects?
