Hi doctor. Can you kindly share what are the risks of epidural? If it can stop the pain, why don't all women take it before delivery? Is a weak back following delivery with epidural is more likely due to delivery itself or epidural? Does epidural need to be requested before one reaches a certain dilation size? Is there a point where it is too late to take epidural? Thank you doctor.

Menjawab bagi pihak Sunway Medical Centre: It is best to ask your anaesthetist regarding epidural anaesthesia. In an established medical centre, epidural is usually available round the clock and can be arranged quite quickly (also depends on the availability of your anaesthetist). There is no limit to when one can request for an epidural. However, it may be very challenging to site an epidural when mommy is in intense pain and is unable to sit still. No, studies have proven that epidural does not increase risk of postpartum back pain. The symptom is largely due to pregnancy itself.
