Hi! First of all sending a big hug because receiving a diagnosis like this with no family history can feel very overwhelming and confusing. The good news is that asthma in Singapore is actually very common, affecting about 1 in 5 children, and it is very manageable with the right approach. Many children also improve significantly as they get older. A few practical tips that make a real difference day to day: Know your child's triggers. Common ones in Singapore include dust mites, haze, pet dander, viral infections like the common cold, and sudden temperature changes like going from outdoor heat into a cold air-conditioned room. Keeping a simple diary of when symptoms flare up helps you and your doctor identify patterns. Bedding matters a lot. Dust mites are a huge trigger and thrive in our humid climate. Wash bedsheets weekly in hot water, use dust-mite-proof mattress and pillow covers, and minimise soft toys in the sleeping area. Understand your child's medications. There are two types: relievers like Ventolin which are used during an attack, and controllers or preventers like inhaled steroids which are taken daily to keep inflammation down. Many parents stop the controller when the child seems fine but it is important to continue as prescribed. Get an Asthma Action Plan from your paed. This is a written guide on what to do at each level of symptoms, including when to give medication at home and when to go to A&E. It takes the guesswork out of scary moments. Inform school and caregivers. Make sure teachers know the diagnosis and have a spare reliever inhaler available. The most important thing is regular follow-up with your paed so they can adjust the treatment plan as your child grows. You've got this mama!

Jump on it early when a cold starts. Dust free bedroom, no smoke near baby, tell daycare and keep action plan on the fridge. You've got this!
