When is an Episiotomy required?

It is required if your doctor assesses that the baby head is about to tear the vagina, to prevent tears to unwanted areas - the uretha or anus. On rare occasions, such tears can cause a fistula - a permanent connection between the vagina and the anus or the bladder.
