What are the foods that I should avoid while breastfeeding?
You should avoid: Caffeine / Chocolate Some babies are not able to excrete caffeine as quickly or efficiently as adults. Too much caffeine in their systems may lead to irritation, crankiness and sleeplessness. Citrus Fruits (Orange, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit) Certain compounds found in citrus fruits and juices may lead to fussiness, spitting up and even diaper rash. You can eat papaya or mango instead. Broccoli / Cauliflower / Onion / Cabbage / Cucumber / Peppers They may cause baby to have more gas. Alcohol One drink or less per day likely poses little risk for babies but if your drinking habits falls into the moderate or heavy category, it is best to avoid. Spicy Food (Cinnamon, Garlic, Curry, Chili Pepper) Some babies get irritated and fussy for hours. Garlic They may cause breastmilk to take on a slight flavour of the garlic (it can enter milk up to two hours after a meal). Some babies do not like the taste and may fuss at the breast. Fish It might not cause fussiness or even fast but because mercury found in fish can find its way into breastmilk. Peppermint / Parsley They may be a "milk killer". Some mummies will have their milk supply reduced when consumed. Prunes / Cherries They have laxative effect. Peanuts / Dairy Products / Wheat / Eggs / Shellfish / Soy / Walnuts / Almonds It will be better to avoid allergens if there is food allergies in the family. You can bring baby to the doctor for an allergy test if you can't leave them out of your diet. If you worry that baby is allergic, watch out for these signs: - Hives or welts - Flushed skin or rash - Face, tongue or lip swelling - Vomitting and/or diarrhoea - Coughing or wheezing - Difficulty in breathing - Loss of consciousness Do bring baby to the doctor if suspected of an allergy. Some allergies may be mild but there are allergies which may be really dangerous and may pose a threat to baby.
