Agree with Jacq! When I just moved to Sweden and was invited to international pot luck dinners in university or at work, I often worry about the level of spices in my food and would dull down my food. After a while, I stopped serving the bland versions of sambal, curries and rendang --- and guess what, they commented that those meals tasted wayyyy better than the ones I previously brought over. From then onwards, I stopped thinking twice over such things. I mean, I don't expect the Swedes to make their meatballs with a side of sambal for my sake right haha. They will definitely appreciate your authentic Philippines dish in all its glory :)

I would say, just make an authentic version and serve it to them. Love it or hate it, it's up to them. At least they got to try the real deal. ;)
If your friend is American, I think you'll have a hard time. Their food in the US is so bland. Maybe just start it out as side dish.
I fillet the tuyo (or buy gourmet tuyo in a jar) then sautee with garlic and onion then mix with pasta. They will love it.
