Oh dear, a eye infection at 27 weeks can be quite uncomfortable, so I understand your concern! From what I've heard, certain eye drops, especially ones containing povidone-iodine, are best avoided in the second and third trimesters, so it is really important not to just grab anything off the pharmacy shelf. My friend actually went to a specialist for something similar during her pregnancy and was told that even though eye drops feel "just topical," some of the medication can still be absorbed into your system, so proper guidance is needed. Some antibacterial drops are generally considered safer, but even those really should be prescribed rather than self-chosen during pregnancy. Do take care to mention to your doctor as well about the correct way to apply the drops, as good instillation technique can help reduce how much gets absorbed systemically. Please do check with your O&G or an eye specialist who knows your full pregnancy history, they will be the best person to advise you on what is safe for you and your little one.
