Reading difficulties

Any pri 1 child struggling in reading and recognising words? But he speaks well. Isit a sign of dyslexia?

Oh don't worry, you're not alone in this! Speaking well but struggling to read is actually a pretty common pattern with dyslexia, since it affects how the brain processes written language rather than spoken language. My neighbour went through something similar with her son, she talked to his form teacher first, then got a referral letter from the polyclinic to KKH for a proper assessment, which really helped them get clarity early. One thing that also helped was working on structured phonics at home, teaching him to recognise letter-sound patterns so he could decode unfamiliar words more confidently, and his reading did improve over time. Do check with a specialist or paediatrician though, as they'll be best placed to assess whether it's dyslexia or just a reading gap that needs some extra support, either way, catching it early makes such a big difference!
