hitting a child is definitely not acceptable, but sometimes, before we help, we should try and understand what the parent is going through. it is very normal even for the most loving and caring parents to hit their children in a fit of irriatation and frustration. if it happens over and over again, then there is certainly something wrong. you should try and speak to the parent(s) in confidence and ask if you can help in any way. and if possible, take the child and help to soothe.

yes i definitely would. i have done it earlier when i saw one of my neighbours relentlessly beating her 2 year old. it was so not acceptable to me. i immediately asked her why she was hitting the child and asked her to let me hold her. the baby was terrified and i soothed her, then gave her back to the mom. i told her that next time she does this, i will be forced to intervene and that it is not right for her to do so.
