Writing involves fine motor skills so do anything that helps him to train his finger control. Dough play, painting with brushes, threading, colouring with chunky crayons. To start off with tracing, you can get him to draw in sand too. Frm there once he can grip better then can move on to tracing dotted lines. Lots of praise and encouragement needed too!!

I think that it will also be good if u can get age suitable writing or colouring materials that are not toxic and are thick enough for an easy grasp. I think joining the dots, tracing and colouring are good skills to start with first
