There are a lot of books on how to teach your child to read. It depends a lot of your child's learning styles and thus you might need to try out a few methods to see whether it suits your child's learning style. For me, I think it is important to teach phonetic and sightwords together. Too much reliance on sightwords teaching will cause dylexia issues in children and they can't read new words that they encounter. Here are some of the recommendations: 1. Montessori phonics, e.g. pink series, blue series and green series. You can find a lot of online resources on the phonics and word lists. 2. I bought Terry Cooper's "100 Words Kids Need to Read by 1st Grade: Sight Word Practice to Build Strong Readers" for my fiance's best friend as a Christmas gift. He is not a native English speaker and he is enrolling his son into an English speaking dagis or kindergarten. I chose this book because it benefits both the parent and the child. It contains word riddles, games, and puzzles which makes the teaching and learning educational yet fun.
