Are varicose veins a serious and common problem in pregnancy?

I hear a lot of people get varicose veins during pregnancy. How does one prevent it or reduce it once it starts? Did anyone here experience it?

Varicose veins during pregnancy are generally harmless but can be a nuisance and a source of discomfort. Women can get distended veins in their legs and genital area, which can be very uncomfortable. A lot of women also have piles (distended veins in the anal area). If you have varicose veins, keep a lookout for one-sided calf/leg swelling as it may be a sign that you have a blood clot, which can be fatal.
