Hi Melissa, you meant nipple shields right. Nipple shields are used to cover a mother's nipple and areola while nursing. It acts as a barrier between the baby and the mummy and the baby sucks on the shield instead of directly on the nipples. Shields are used to protect sore nipples or helping a baby to latch when nipples are flat or inverted. If your nipples are sore and you really need to use a nipple shield, try to get your baby back on the breast soonest possible. If you're using it for flat/inverted nipples, you can use it for a few seconds then remove it when your nipple has been drawn out by the sucking. Reason being that nipple shields are less stimulating and can potentially reduce your milk supply when used excessively. When baby becomes used to the nipple shield it can be hard to wean off. How to use a nipple shield: 1. Sterilize the shield and wash your hands thoroughly. 2. Turn the shield inside out (about half) and place it on your nipple. 3. Push the back of the nipple shield towards your areola and your nipples should be in the middle of the drawn-out tip of the shield. 4. Put some breastmilk on the sides of the shield to improve the suction. It is also important to select the right sizing of your nipple shield:

Breast shields are worn in bras to aid breastfeeding when you have flat, inverted or sore nipples. You slot them into your bra, that's all. You can also use them to collect your milk instead of using a breast pad. I have breast shields but don't use them. It's not necessary for me as I'm home most of the time and don't have problems breast feeding. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_shell

It is not necessary unless you have inverted nipples. http://sg.theasianparent.com/nipple-shape-and-breastfeeding/
