MY KINDERGARTENER

Anecdotal Records for a 4 year old son#help_mom #adviceappreciated Hello Asianparents! I am frustrated. My son just recently enrolled in a public school which specializes STEM curriculum. A special science school to be exact since I am planning that my son hopefully be enrolled in one of Philippine Science Highschool someday. Last June 26, we were called on by my son's adviser for pushing a classmate during play but my son also got a head bump at the back part. My husband and I signed eventhough its quite painful on our part since we already saw how excited our son goes to school, he already developed routine such as waking up early in the morning and writes his name faster too! (He is already writing his name before the start of classes). Can read few sight words, and even now can read few 2-4 syllables. The thing is, my son got called again, the 2nd time around since the teacher called our attention for spitting on her classmate. I am so dismayed and afraid at the same time for my son since we don't know when did he became a bully. But also got frustrated how the teacher handles the situation, I asked my son if he said sorry to her classmate but he said no, I asked if his teacher said to say sorry to the kid he spat on, but no again. I told him to say sorry to his classmate and asked why did he do it but he said nothing. He told me and even cried, that he is also being bullied by the kid who caused his head bump last time and never even said sorry. I told him that he should said sorry to the other kid, the one he spat on since it is his fault. and that kid, doesnt have anything to do with what happened to him last time. (He is referring to the last time that he got recorded because he was also being bullied din daw) I am also a teacher but in HS, I am assigned to be an adviser in the last section and was even handling students who are CICL, the ones who are juvenile delinquents, rape victims and even students who came from Bahay Pag-asa. But it never came to me, na nagkaproblema sila but since I am always reaching out and develops rapport with them, you know the typical teacher things. I really love my students because I think that even from me they can experience being loved by a mother figure. And I find it na parang this kinder teacher does not exhaust all her means to be a teacher to my child. Makulit siya, yes, pero gaano ba talaga ka unruly ang bata ko na kailangan niya ma-anecdotal ng 2 beses bago pa man mag dadalawang buwan. Isn't it O.A.? O parang tamad lang talaga yung teacher? I am hurt, because I am exhausting all means to other students and I am expecting the same thing with my kid. I have been handling the last sections for the past 9 years and I have never experienced to record a kid even those who are CICL, every month. And I think a Kindergartener shouldnt experience this early on dahil baka matrauma nlg ng paulit ulit ng lista o mawalan ng gana. Sinabihan niya ako kahapon na, magtransfer nlg daw siya kahit gusto niya sana doon sa school dahil marami na raw siyang friends and it breaks my heart. I told him na, hindi nlg tayo magtransfer kasi pano yung friends mo at nagsmile siya. We remind him everyday, na hindi mangaway ng classmates just make friends. But I know na its just normal for his age. At I stamped him 3 stars at tumawa siya sakin. I saw how happy he was, at kahit kailan since early on, wala siyang star na may naiuwi sa bahay. And it saddens me. I always remind him na, magstrive sya makastar at this last week may 3 stars na daw siya. At I asked him ano sabi ni teacher, wala lang naman daw. But I am happy with it kahit yung iba 20 sobra na at 3 silang parang hirap na hirap mgkastar sa room tig iisa o dalawa lang silang 3 nya pang kaklase. (I saw it during the signing of the anecdotal record.) What to do moms? Hindi naman kami ngkulang sa pagremind, even his Lolos and Lolas are brokenhearted by what he said and it deeply affects since we loved him so much but I am also in fear na baka mging bully siya. But ayoko rin maapektuhan siya ng malala dahil lang dito.

Ay naman, I can really hear how much you care and how frustrated you are, and honestly, it makes total sense coming from a teacher yourself! You know the work that goes into really seeing a child, at di lang i-record agad-agad. Here's the thing though: anecdotal records are super helpful tools para ma-track ng teacher ang patterns at milestones, pero ang way ng paggamit niya, parang one-sided lang and without real follow-through with your son. Most mums I know na may similar experience, sabi nila the difference is between a teacher na nag-rereport of behavior versus one na tumutulong to fix it. Hindi ba dapat kasama ang guidance or talk-through sa bata kung bakit nangyari, not just "spitting = bad record"? Lalo na sa kinder, seryoso, ang overt aggression ay common phase, especially if siya mismo na-bully din. It doesn't excuse it, pero context matters. That said, at alam mo yun better than most, may chance din na your son ay genuinely struggling to regulate or express frustration, which is age-appropriate pero needs gentle teaching, hindi puro recording. Some parents I know swear by really frank conversations with the teacher about specific strategies ("pag galit siya, pwede ba i-guide sa cooling corner?" or role-playing apologies at home), but a few had to move schools kasi talaga naman the fit wasn't there. Only you can feel kung talagang dismissive or just overwhelmed ang teacher. What I'd suggest: one more meeting with the teacher with concrete asks, can she help him practice apologies, recognize triggers, reward effort not just behavior? And maybe worth a quick chat with a child psychologist o pediatrician too, just to rule out kung may underlying frustration he can't voice yet. You've got the mom-and-teacher instinct, trust it, pero get backup.
