21mo Not eating meat or veggie in their actual form

Hi my 21 mo is still eating porridge and mee Sua etc. she can eat fruits or corn and holds them well so I don’t think it’s a psychomotor skill. but when I give her meat or veggie in their original form she will say she doesn’t like. She must see them mixed up then she will eat. Is that the norm?

Aiyoh don't worry too much lah, my daughter was exactly like this at 21 months, also only wanted everything "camouflaged" inside porridge or mee sua, cannot see the actual piece of meat or veggie! Her PD actually told her it's super common at this age, something about toddlers needing to feel "safe" with familiar textures and appearances before they can accept food in its original form. Someone in my mum WhatsApp group mentioned that her friend brought her lo to SBCC Baby & Child Clinic at Thomson because she was also worried, and the doctor there said as long as the child is still eating and growing, mixing everything together is perfectly fine, no need to force the "proper" form yet. My friend who went to KKH for her daughter's developmental check also said the therapist told her to just keep offering the food in its original form on the side without pressure, so the child gets used to seeing it, even if she don't eat it at first. Some mums in my group swear by just gradually making the pieces more visible over time, like start hiding then slowly make it a bit more obvious, though a few said their kids still rejected it for months so patience is key lah! The fact that your girl can handle corn and fruits already shows she's doing well, so just keep at it and she'll come around!
