It is a treatment option for children between the ages 6 to 12 suffering from rapidly deteriorating myopia, to help slow down the progression. Each treatment course is over a 2-year period and requires children to use 0.01% atropine eye drop once a day. The atropine drop will cause minimal increase in pupil size. Hence, children will not require tinted or progressive reading glasses for near work. In a five-year trial (which started in 2006), it was found that the low-dose atropine was effective in slowing myopia progression by 50-60% over a two-year period with very little side effects.
