RIE seems to suggests that babies are independent from birth, but isnt there a potential for people to ignore child under the impression that they desire or even need independence?

Not sure if I've understood RIE correctly, but I would think that in this case, a parent should communicate with the baby to try and find out what he/she wants. Hence, I understand "independence" as acknowledging the child as an individual and respecting that he/she has his/her own preferences. Not sure if my interpretation is right though..
