Common causes of sudden bouts of vomiting are: - viral or bacterial infections (such as gastroenteritis) - cold - urinary tract infection - poisonous substance - ear infection - food allergy Such episodes will generally get better within a couple of days without any particular treatment. Ensure that your child is taking enough fluid (ORS, clear broth, cocnut water are good options) to prevent dehydration and try to get him to rest. Try offering regular food (such as crackers, toast, broths, mashed potatos, rice etc) after 6 hours of no vomiting. Vomiting becomes a cause of concern when you notice other symptoms, such as: - Signs of dehydration, including a dry mouth, lack of tears, weeing less often and floppiness. - A fever, with a temperature of 39 degrees or higher. - A lack of appetite. - Vomiting for more than 24 hours, or vomiting with great force. - A rash that doesn’t fade when you press his skin. - Sleepiness or severe irritability. - Shortness of breath. - A swollen tummy, or severe tummy pain. - A headache and a stiff neck. - Blood or a green substance, known as bile, in his vomit (keep some sample for the doctor to see). In such cases, please bring your child to the doctors.
