Nausea at the thought of food

I'm 9 weeks pregnant, my first pregnancy. Trying my best to eat nutrients rich food for my baby. I've always been a picky eater and sensitive to the smell of food but a huge foodie and have always eaten relatively healthy (minimal to no processed food and no sugar). My sensitivity to smell heightened and just the thought of food, makes me nauseated and it doesn't get better even towards the evenings. Eating/drinking really sour stuff helps for a short while. I can keep the food I eat down, but I dread the thought of the next meal. Because I'm still actively exercising, I would need to eat more. I heard it gets better into the 2nd trimester, but I'm worried if it doesn't. Any active moms here struggling to eat properly? What did you do to get more nutrients in?

Hey, I totally get it, the heightened smell sensitivity can really throw you off, especially when you're used to enjoying food! The good news is that many mums I've heard from say it does ease up into the second trimester, though I understand the worry. A few things that seemed to help others: eating smaller, more frequent meals of bland, dry foods (think saltines, bananas, plain applesauce) rather than pushing yourself to eat proper meals three times a day, it's less overwhelming mentally and physically. Some mums swore by plain yogurt with blueberries, and a couple mentioned that smoothies work surprisingly well because you're not confronted with the sight or smell of food; you can slip ginger into them too, which helps settle the nausea. Staying really hydrated throughout the day made a difference for them as well. Since you're still exercising, I hear vitamin B6 actually has decent backing for reducing nausea, it's worth asking your doctor about, along with whether ginger supplements or products might help you specifically. And honestly, right now it's okay if your "nutrients" don't look like your usual healthy eating; getting something down that you can keep is the priority. The sour foods helping is a classic first-trimester thing, so lean into what works for your body at this moment. Of course, do check in with your own doctor or midwife about what's best for your situation, especially if the nausea stays intense, they might have other suggestions tailored to you.
