Cough for toddler

Is cough syrup really not suitable for kids below the age of 2 years old? As private clinic ever prescribed that but we did not administrate to her as the natural remedy we have been trying kind of work whereas when we went to KKH they mention no cough syrup is recommended for kids below the age of 2.
